One of the best parts of attending a live show or festival is running into your friends or meeting new people in the lobby, and chatting about the show. Maybe you'll bump into one of the performers, and you can tell them how much you loved their show, or they can tell you about an upcoming project. In order to recreate this experience, we're utilizing an online video chatting tool that takes things to the next level. It's called Gather Town, and we have used it to build a Virtual Pavilion Theatre lobby for opening and closing night activities, and you can even watch the show, right in the Virtual Pavilion Theatre.
Gather Town looks a lot like an old video game. It's avatar based, so that means you'll have a tiny version of you that you move around a virtual space. As your avatar gets closer to other people's avatars, you will be able to see and hear each other. Here's how to participate:
If you have a ticket to one of the applicable evenings (May 5th & 15th) or special events, you will receive a link and a password for the Virtual Pavilion Theatre in your ticket reminder email. There is no additional charge. Gather Town works right in your browser. It is suggested that you use Firefox or Chrome for best results.
You will need to be seen and heard, so make sure that your camera and microphone are functioning. We also strongly suggest that you wear headphones to avoid feedback. Also, clothing is mandatory.
When you log in, you'll need to sign up with an email address, name yourself and decide what your avatar should look like. That's it. You'll enter the space and go check things out and chat with people by using your arrow keys. You'll notice that certain areas are private spaces. Only people in the same private space can see and hear each-other, allowing for private conversations between small groups.
There are objects like posters and calendars that you can interact with using your 'x' key. Phillips Brewing & Distilling Co. and The Fox'n Hounds Sahali Liquor Store have sponsored a virtual beer garden, and snacksEh the virtual concession. You will find posters and menus in these areas that link directly to their webpage or an order form.
When showtime comes, head into the theatre, and press 'x' to watch the broadcast of the show. Choose whether to 'sit' your avatar in a private space, so that you can't be interrupted, or watch in an area that allows you to see other people's reactions and chat during the show.
It's as easy as that. We will have representatives from WCT and Chimera Theatre in the Virtual Pavilion on both nights to answer any questions. Go to http://gather.town to try it out in advance.
