Help us create a magical and sustainable Oz! Our team is hard at work getting ready for this spring’s big family musical, The Wizard of Oz, and we need your support. In an effort to be more environmentally-conscious and sustainable, the vision for Oz’s magical set is to be made from recycled materials—that’s where you come in. Got some aging or broken household items you need to clear out? Looking for a new way to recycle your bottles, containers, and cans? Not sure what to do with old kitchen items you’ll never use again? We want it all! Bikes and rakes, pots and pans, bottles and cans, oh my!
“I chose The Wizard of Oz this season because it is the perfect show to gather and celebrate our community. When Set Designer Narda McCarroll and I began working on the design concept for The Wizard of Oz, we were dedicated to finding new, innovative ways be more sustainable, and looked at how we could repurpose common objects and materials that are available within our community. The support of our community is the lifeblood of Western Canada Theatre. For over 46 years you have been there for WCT, and we are thrilled to invite you all to participate in this innovative new initiative in creative sustainability. This is an entirely new way for you to support WCT, to support sustainability, and to participate in the creative process. In every one of our productions, our community is on our stage. This time it will be literal – your discarded rakes, bicycles, yogurt containers, and umbrellas will be re-used in building an imaginative, creative, magical world.” –JAMES MACDONALD WCT Artistic Director & The Wizard of Oz Director
All of the items we are looking for can be second-hand, busted or broken, well-used, or anything you’re looking to recycle or discard in the name of a good cause. Please do not purchase items to donate—items should be otherwise destined for disposal or recycling. Donated items will NOT be returned but instead repurposed into The Wizard of Oz set. They will be modified or painted as part of the production process, and any and all items that can be repurposed or recycled at the end of the production will be. We are committed to disposing of all set materials in as eco-friendly a manner as possible. Explore the list below to see what we’re on the hunt for, then bring your items to the Pavilion Theatre and you’ll have a chance to win FREE TICKETS!
We are no longer accepting donations. Thank you to all who contributed!
Every person who drops off items will be entered into weekly draws to win a pair of tickets to The Wizard Oz! Plus, we’ll be recognizing everyone who patriciates in this campaign in a unique way during the run of the show.
We will also be giving away some $10 gift certificates to a fabulous local business, Our Footprints Company., who share a focus on sustainability, and have generously offered to partner with us on this initiative to get the word out. Thank you!
You definitely don’t want to miss the chance to see the inventive ways we repurpose your items on stage! If you don’t win tickets, you can purchase them at wctlive.ca/oz. Tickets are on sale now.
