CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS:
CELEBRATING INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY WITH
THE ALL A’BROAD COMMUNITY CABARET
Project: The All A’Broad Community Cabaret. To celebrate International Women’s Day (IWD) and give voice to the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women, Western Canada Theatre (WCT) is curating a 2-hour showcase of Kamloops talent.
When: Friday, March 8th 2019. Doors at 7pm, show 8-10pm.
Where: The Pavilion Theatre, 1025 Lorne Street, Kamloops
Who: We are seeking approximately 15 short acts (from 3-10 minutes) that are inspired by IWD’s aims of leveraging women’s advancement, accelerating gender parity, reinforcing commitment to diversity and inclusion and celebrating women’s achievements. Types of act might include, but are not limited to, theatre, stand-up comedy, spoken word, dance and music. All levels of performers are welcomed and encouraged to apply. Our hope is to bring together a cross-section of community talent that includes amateur, emerging and established artists, and for the individual acts to have a thematic connection but be a mix of comedy and drama, musical and non-musical. Performers must be aged 16 or over.
The All A’Broad Community Cabaret should include acts that are funny, controversial, inclusive, musical, theatrical, political, feminist, empowering, diverse, uplifting, weird and wonderful! This project will be curated and directed by Tracey Power, playwright of last season’s women’s hockey hit GLORY and the director/choreographer of this season’s ELF–The Musical, in consultation with Western Canada Theatre’s Artistic Director James MacDonald.
Time Commitment: Performers selected to appear in the cabaret must be available for a cabaret cast meet and greet led by Tracey Power on Sunday, January 20th 2019 at The Pavilion Theatre, Kamloops. Tracey will also schedule times with each individual act in February to directorially assist with their performances if needed, and all performers must be available for a dress rehearsal on the day of the show – Friday, March 8th as well as for the performance that evening. Showtime is 7pm.
Compensation: The purpose of the event is to celebrate the women in our community and beyond. A modest honorarium will be paid to performers, and proceeds from the event will be donated to a charitable organization benefitting women. Expenses such as rehearsal space, amateur playwright’s royalties, set/props/costumes will be the responsibility of the individual artists involved.
What to send us: A simple one-page doc by email to rsvp@wctlive.ca with the following information:
- Your name, email and telephone number
- A bit about yourself (and your group), the name of your act, duration and a brief explanation of what you intend to do. Please indicate if your material is original.
- 100 words on why you want to be part of the All A’Broad Community Cabaret
- Include any tech or set-up requirements, and any notes on style and staging
- If appropriate, and it supports your submission, please feel free to include sound bites/a couple of photos/links etc.
Deadline for Submissions: January 17, 2019. Depending on the amount of submissions, we may not be able to include every act. We are striving to create an evening that has variety and so this may be a deciding factor on what acts we can include. We greatly appreciate the time you put into your submissions.
